This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Many of my wonderful students come from the neighborhood around the school, but we also get many from various areas around Memphis. All are a delight to teach and I love to witness their interest in books. We are a Title I school and our students population is quite diverse - socially, economically, and ethnically.
Oh, how I love my role as a middle school librarian!
Every day is new and different.
I see my book club students once a week during their lunch periods. Our book club is also the LUNCH BUNCH! We are all dedicated to having a time for enrichment where we can explore, research, and discuss their curiosity and challenging readings. My students need particular books so they can enter the Battle of the Books competition. This competition opens the door for the family to experience a world of a "loyal friend" -a book!
My Project
My project, Battle of the Books, is a district-wide reading incentive program. The purpose of this program is to simply encourage students to read good books and have fun while competing with their peers. My school is using the 10-book reading list and will have three-person teams. Each team will read four books on the book list. The school battles are held second semester.
A typical "battle" is set up like a tournament or game, like College Bowl or Family Feud.
The teams earn points by answering questions about the books on the book lists. Assignment to particular teams takes place at the competition. The students play several rounds, each against a different team. At the end of round one, points are tallied and the two teams with the most points are invited to a "Grand Battle." The other teams become the audience.
The students gain knowledge and enjoyment from reading good books, sharing them with friends, parents, and teachers ... PLUS, a fun day of playing in the "Battle."
