I am the Media Specialist at a K through 8th grade International Baccalaureate magnet public school with about 430 students. My school community includes families of many different shapes and sizes, including families from many different cultural groups.
As the Media Specialist, I want all of our students to both see themselves reflected in the books on our shelves and to learn about the diversity of our community.
The Media Center is the hub of the school and it is vital that we have literature that reflects the lives of all of our students. This will help them to see their own lives mirrored in a book, and also have windows into our global community.
Everyday, I see a child's world enriched and expanded by a story they encounter in the library. It is my hope that these books will be a catalyst for enriching the classroom relationships and friendships of our students as they come to appreciate the diversity of life experiences and families in our global society.
My Project
My school will be joining three others to create a Battle of the Books for 3rd through 5th graders. We will be using the books selected for the Intermediate Young Hoosier Book Award list this year. I have already purchased one of each title, but that will not be enough for us to allow many students to participate.
Our students are avid readers and they are very excited about this chance to show what they know!
We have STEM related activities and clubs, but this will allow our bookworms to shine in a new way and share books across schools.
