My Students

My students absolutely love competition, especially my juniors who are stressed with college and career planning. I like to set up my classroom, so that when they walk into the room, they see that it’s been set up for a game, so they are instantly energized, engaged, and ready to share what they know! This helps take away some of the stress of their junior year and give them meaningful learning experiences. Their favorite games are team competitions where they compete about their knowledge of our class text. The more relevant the book, the greater the competition.

My Project

The Battle of the Books is a highly-engaging, autonomously driven reading competition in which teams are given a collection of books. All teams have the same eight books and teams are provided with two copies of each. Students must read at least two books, but are encouraged to read as many as they can to increase their chances of winning.

The Battle of the Books culminates in an academic-team style competition with a buzzer system, where students work with their teams to answer as many, correct questions about the books as they can.
