This rowdy crew of fifth graders loves to work hard and play hard. They are voracious readers with inquisitive minds and compassionate souls who give everything they do their very best effort.
This is an extremely competitive group who can make a competition out of anything.
They've issued a challenge to one another: To read all 20 of our state's Children's Book Award Nominee books before the end of this school year. It won't be easy, but these are no ordinary readers!
My Project
My students are encouraged to read high quality contemporary literature. Because they are so competitive, they've turned this into a "Battle of the Books" competition. As a class, they have challenged each other to read all 20 of our state's book award nominees for this school year. These books are from multiple genres and reading levels and this challenge will truly test their reading abilities.
For students to achieve this lofty goal, they must have access to all 20 books.
This is quite a challenge! Books are expensive and classroom budgets only go so far. This project will help me give these kids access to a complete set of books for their competition kick-off.
At the end of the school year, we will hold a final "Battle of the Books" class competition for a battle champion. Students will be asked a series of questions about all 20 books that can only be answered by those who've read them. The winner will be crowned Book Battle Champion.
