The students at our school have worked hard to excel and aim for excellence. We have brought our school grade up in the past few years while overcoming great odds. Each year the community supports where they can but, unfortunately, finances are tight in our area.
Compared to the rest of the county, our school has twice the average percentage of students with special needs, twice the average percentage of students who are homeless, and has the highest poverty rate in the county as over 88% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
Our students participate in the Battle of the Books competition that takes a group of students to compete at the county level. After reading all of the Sunshine State Young Reader Award books and proving their knowledge on the books, the students have the opportunity to join the school's team and compete at the end of the year.
I'm requesting books from the 2017 Sunshine State Young Readers Award list, including multiple copies of Short, Click'd, The Van Gogh Deception, and Frogkisser.
The addition of these books to our classroom library will give the students a greater opportunity to participate in the competition.
The student books are highly popular with the students and are often in limited supply during the school year that they are chosen for the list.
