My students are second, third, fourth, and fifth graders who are high achievers. They are at two different schools as I travel to each school throughout the week. Both of my schools are Title I schools where all students receive free breakfast, lunch, and snack. We also have students at each school who are part of the backpack program where they get bags of food over the weekend and over school breaks.
The students I serve are part of the school's Academically Gifted program or part of our after-school STEM clubs.
My Project
My students began asking about next year's NC Elementary Battle of Books titles as soon as they searched and found out that the list had come out. Luckily we already have multiple copies of the novel Found by Margaret Peterson Haddix, but we are in need of copies of the other fourteen. The titles include the following, At the Bottom of the World by Bill Nye & Gregory Mone, Ban This Book by Alan Gratz, Becoming Naomi Leόn by Pam Muñoz Ryan, Blood on the River by Elisa Carbone, The Fourteenth Goldfish by Jennifer L. Holm, How to Steal a Dog by Barbara O'Connor, The Old Willis Place by Mary Downing Hahn, Rain Reign by Ann M. Martin, Ruby Holler by Sharon Creech, Runaway Twin by Peg Kehret, Save Me a Seat by Sarah Weeks & Gita Varadarajan, A Snicker of Magic by Natalie Lloyd, Stella by Starlight by Sharon M. Draper, and A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle.
They are excited to get a head start for next year's competition and want to be sure they have ample time to read all fifteen novels required.
These titles will support students at both of my schools as they have a team. My hope is to be able to have them do a mock battle next year against each other to practice for the competition.
