Help me give my students book sets for teacher and student book clubs from the Kentucky Bluegrass Award list and Battle of the Books as we continue with remote schooling.
I work in an amazing art integrated public school in Kentucky. Our students' audition and are accepted into our school for creative and performing arts. This makes for very unique and wonderful teaching and learning environment. Though all our students have the commonality of being identified as talented in their focus arts areas, we have a diverse population of students with a wide range of academic interests and abilities that come from all over our city.
My students are highly motivated and hardworking children-Because of their diverse educational backgrounds, they have all had different scientific and math experiences, but providing engaging and motivating hands-on experiences and online tools in the lab allows all my students the ability to teach and learn from one another and achieve success.
Students get an insider's view of how engineers apply mathematical skills and scientific knowledge to solve problems. In my classroom, we think and wonder, wonder, and think, each and every day. It is my intention to create 21st-century thinkers and problem solvers.
My Project
Julia Donaldson wrote, "I opened a book and in I strode, and now no one can find me..." When reading, kids sit, sprawl, bob on balance ball chairs, curl up all over the room and step into the pages of their books and take adventures outside the walls of our classroom.
Reading is important- it allows for students to escape into fantastic and literary worlds of their choosing.
My students are all in different places in their own personal journeys towards living a readerly life, but everyone is making great strides towards their own personal goals for reading. The Battle of the Books and the Kentucky Bluegrass Award book lists always represent a wide range of topics and genres as well as multiple reading levels. The lists include both classic titles, such as Number the Stars, as well as more recent publications, like Coyote Sunrise. The purpose of this project is to continue to encourage and promote regular and wide reading by the students in my classroom- though we will be taking it remotely this year.
The purpose of this project is to continue to encourage and promote regular and wide reading by the students while they are not in the classroom. I know the importance of encouraging these young readers to find books and authors that they love. A love of books is something that they will carry with them as they continue in their lives. I can change their lives from the inside out…. "My chair and my house are just the same, But I have a book inside." (Julia Donaldson)
