Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach grades 7 through 12 in a large city school. My school is 46% low income and is ethnically diverse. Five percent of students have special education plans that utilize inclusion and pull-out programs. At this time, there are approximately 1,000 students taking music classes. These classes include band, orchestra, choir, music theory, guitar, and music appreciation. I teach a very diverse group of students that represent every ethnic group, religion, and economic status. I am very proud of how they come together to perform such beautiful music.
Only a handful of students are able to participate in private lessons outside of school, and many have limited exposure to professional performances.
I try to give my students everything they need to be successful in music. Working with my school community and grant writing is a very important part of my funding.
My Project
We have started a new piano class at our school and are so excited to have 112 students in this brand new class. We have students practicing in the classroom, in the hallway, and in individual practice rooms. The ability to spread out is really important considering the covid precautions that are being implemented. The hallway and the practice rooms have limited outlets and we would like to spread out the students a little more. We have some really good keyboards that work with AA batteries and are perfect to be used in areas where outlets are not accessible. Help us provide AA batteries so our students can play their keyboards all over the place!
