Help me give my students access to feminine care products, hand lotion and a mirror in our girls bathroom.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our school is located in the Armour Square neighborhood on the southeast side of Chicago. Our school has a rich history and culture where even two staff members have returned to join the staff after graduating as teachers.
My students, while culturally diverse (68 % Asian, 15% Black, 11% Hispanic and 6% White) are very inclusive and supportive of one another in the classroom.
My students are inquisitive by nature and really shine during science class when allowed to work in groups. Eighty percent of our school is considered low-income and forty-one percent are considered English language learners and so it is critical to have instructional materials and supports to help them be successful. With me as a advocate for them and proper supports, they can continue to succeed and flourish.
As a teacher I often overhear students discuss some things they desire that I think would help them feel better about the school learning environment. At times the environmental factors can have a huge impact on their views of the school and lead to increased learning. Lately I have heard the voices of our female middle school population requesting some updates in the bathroom.
I'd love to surprise our middle school girls with a mini bathroom makeover and basic updates that will help them focus on learning.
I've heard students ask about having a mirror to check their teeth after lunch, or lotion to moisturize their hands after washing and many have asked me personally for feminine products when they have forgotten them at home or started their cycles unexpectedly. It would help if we could supply these items for students in the bathroom. I'm sure not having to worry about these very basic needs will help students continue to move through their days more productively and ultimately save class time.
