Every one of my students has their own story, some will make you laugh, and some will bring tears to your eyes. As an instructor in a high crime and poverty, but low in finances and resources city, I try to create a safe haven for them to escape their harsh reality, so they can be free from their harsh reality, even if it’s just for a moment. That’s a moment of freedom and no stress that they might not have had before. It may be a time for some to smile.
In their eyes is a spark of hope.
They are growing and learning in the same small, tight-knit, music community that inspired me to be a teacher. Forming a band family sometimes feels better than their biological family. They are adventurous, risk takers, bold, free and inquisitive. They are mini inspirations to themselves and others around them, even if they don't know it yet. They are the future and I want to give them a great start to their long successful career.
"Mr. R, ANOTHER instrument is broken, this time, it’s the bass guitar..." With trying to build a great program, the hurdles of finances become very tiring. There is barely enough funds to accommodate basic maintenance, let alone other things needed like what to do in case of a broken instrument.
I have constantly asked myself, "How can you teach and inspire if you can't have the proper tools?" Well, hopefully, with this bass guitar, I will be much closer to no longer having this linger in my head.
For the past four years, my students have been making strides to be a recognized music program just on the local scale.
