Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am fortunate to work with a group of amazing first graders in an ICT classroom. Our beautiful and diverse students include many children for whom English is a second language as well as students with disabilities. This does not define who they are, nor does it affect their enthusiasm for learning.
Our students walk through the door of our classroom each morning excited and eager for the day to begin.
They have been entrusted to us by their loving families and we strive to nurture their minds and give them all they so deserve--educationally, socially, and emotionally.
My Project
We are elated that our students have grown as readers, but have come to the sad realization that we do not have enough books at their current reading levels to sustain and support continued progress. Although our school provides teachers and students with as much as is possible within budgetary constraints, at times it is just not enough.
Our classroom library has several book baskets that are nearly empty and others that contain books that are tattered from years of use.
Our students desperately need new, engaging leveled books so that they may continue to flourish as readers. First grade is a pivotal year in the development of children as literate individuals and books are a necessity to support and promote literacy.
The books we are requesting are all high quality, research based, leveled texts that will supplement our classroom library and enable us to provide instruction to help our students continue to grow as readers.
