I am a health/physical education teacher at an at-risk, high needs elementary school in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. I supply one of the only physical outlets for children in first through fifth grade due to the fact that the streets are not safe for the students to play outside. Furthermore, many of the students lack positive role models and organizations for extracurricular activities. To encourage physical fitness and provide a positive social outlet, I am also the coach of the girls' basketball team, currently in its third year. Each year we are improving in the game of basketball and I have seen the program encourage the girls to do well in school and become better classmates. We have taken trips to local colleges where we meet players and coaches, have played in schools across Brooklyn, and even spend time together in study hall. These are all the start to great success, yet I always see the potential for more. As these girls move on to junior high, I want them to hold on to the experiences from elementary school with them to guide them. If they are able to have lasting memories of the growth they made from the basketball team, I believe it will lead to have more lasting success. I am asking for a digital camera and photo books, water bottles, gym bags, headbands and wrist bands, and practice jerseys. Our girls team consists of many motivated young girls as well as young girls that I see need social support. All of them have great potential and with your help they can hold onto their positive experiences to help guide them for their future.
