This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
An unknown author stated," Best part about growing up with no money is you know how to have fun without it." Being on the girls basketball team is the fun this author is talking about for 13 young ladies. However, having no money means you cannot afford the sneakers you need to participate.
90% of the students that attend my school are on free/reduced lunch.
They live in projects in the inner city, and stay at school as long as they can to be in a safe environment. The 13 young ladies that play basketball all have over a 2.5 GPA and play basketball to try and earn scholarship money for college.
My Project
The 13 girls that will be receiving the new sneakers all have been wearing the same shoes for at least the last four years. 6 of the girls wear their brothers old shoes. 2 have tape on them to mask the holes. These aforementioned shoes are not safe for the girls to be wearing. Ankles have been twisted, legs broken, etc. due to the poor footwear of the girls. Having new, properly fitted shoes will allow the girls to feel protected and better prepared to play basketball.
Money does not buy happiness, but without money you cannot be happy.
This quote which I developed really hits my project on the head. My girls LOVE playing basketball, but without money for the proper equipment(i.e. Basketball shoes) their love could be cut short.
