This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
UACS serves students Pre K - 8th grade and provides very rigorous academics. It is my goal and with your help, our after school programs can match that rigor. A large majority of our students are ELL, and all of our students receive free lunch. This means most of my students do not have the opportunity to be a part of any type of sports team.
This is the second year our school has had the privilege to have a physical education program, but this is the first year we have a gym.
Because we have a new, beautiful space, we can now make strides to provide our students with different types of sports teams.
My Project
Our school has not been able to provide our students with any sort of athletic teams solely based on the fact that we do not have any equipment to do so. The first question my students asked me on my first day of school last year was "Does this mean you're going to be our basketball coach?"
With the funding of this project, my students will have the chance to be student-athletes for the first time in their lives.
They will have the opportunity to not only learn skills for the game of basketball, but also learn lifelong skills such as teamwork and cooperation.
We have a routine in my classroom where my students refer to each other as STARS. We use this as a positive reinforcement technique to remind each other to stay safe, participate, and use good sportsmanship. I would love the opportunity to take those same concepts and show my students that they can be used in many different facets of their lives, including on a basketball team.
