Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are some of the most resilient, energetic, and inspiring young people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Many of them come from single-parent homes, most qualify for free and reduced lunch at our Title I school, and a large number of them have had to endure homelessness. They are also leaders and role models for their younger siblings who they help take care of while their parents are at work.
In spite of everything they have had to go through, including Hurricane Irma a few months ago, my students still find a way to show up to class smiling every single day.
They are excited about their future and all of the possibility that awaits them. While they are aware it will take a lot of work and dedication to get there, I have never met a more capable group of young people.
My Project
My student-athletes are simply amazing. The amount of effort they put forth in the classroom is matched completely by the effort they put forth on the basketball court. Our girls' basketball teams have been resourceful and dedicated as their basketball season began recently. There have been several difficulties as they attempted to return to normalcy after Hurricane Irma. Regardless, our girls have still given their very best effort in the sport they love. They show up to practice daily, stay late for games, and are on time to classes the very next day.
In order to have a strong season, our girls need matching apparel in the form of warm-up suits that they can wear when traveling to games and after school to maximize the effectiveness of their team practices as they work with their coaches.
The spirt and unity of the team is already there. With the assistance of needed basketball resources to help them improve their athletic skills, such as apparel that will boost their unity as a team, they will be even stronger as they work toward accomplishing their goals. Having matching warm-up suits will not only further cultivate a sense of unity and pride in our athletes, but also help them to travel comfortably in Miami's unpredictable inclement weather.
