Basketball Books for Urban Boys with Emerging Reading Skills
My students need some sets of books for book club. They really love reading about basketball, especially Shaq. They also need interesting books at their low reading levels for their daily independent reading time.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 3rd - 5th graders living in lower Manhattan. 85% of the students in my school are considered low income. As a reading intervention teacher, I work with students struggling with reading. Most of my students are a grade level or more below in reading. It has been a struggle to get them interested in reading, but I have recently found a few book series that hold their interest. The problem is, I don't have enough copies of these books to keep them reading until the end of the school year. I would also like to use these sports books to run a book club with the students, so I can help monitor their comprehension to ensure they are getting the most out of their reading experiences.
My Project
I purchased a few of these sports books myself for my students and I can't keep them on the shelves. There's a waitlist to read the Shaq books, and some students are breezing through my collection. I am hoping to gather more sports books for these students to encourage their new interest in reading.
I am also hoping to get a few sets of books to use for book club with my students.
They are struggling readers, so it is helpful to have several students reading the same book at the same time so I can monitor comprehension and help them as a small group.
Most of these kids would barely read before finding these sports books, and now they can't put the books down. For some of the students, these are their first chapter books! I am hoping to expand my book collection for them and help them achieve their grade level reading goals!
