My students come from very diverse backgrounds, with one unifying factor: poverty. Over 75% of our school qualifies for free and reduced-price lunch. Along with poverty, many have had significant trauma in early childhood, while some continue to experience it on a daily basis.
My school serves a wide variety of students of many different races, ethnicities, languages, and cultures.
Students and parents in our school speak English, Spanish, Ukrainian, Russian, Marshallese, and some small amounts of Moldovan, Pohnpeian, Kapingese, and Albanian. My goal as a teacher (and as a human being!) is to understand, respect, and guide all of my students throughout 7th grade.
My Project
In my district, every student is provided with a laptop at school. I work hard to use this technology to enhance student learning, and not simply replace papers and textbooks. In order for students to benefit from lessons that implement technology, they have to be able to use that technology!
Many students at my school cannot afford headphones.
While the district provides students with laptops (awesome!), students can't access certain materials including edpuzzles, flipped lessons, and audiobooks without headphones. I would like a class set of headphones so that students can work on these assignments in class without disrupting the learning of others.
I would also like 10 extra chargers so that when students forget to charge their laptops at home, I have spares in my room. While students are generally very responsible when it comes to charging their devices, they are 12, so sometimes they forget. Many students stay in two (or more) different homes throughout the week, and chargers can easily get left at grandma's, dad's, or mom's.
