My students need a pencil sharpener, dry erase markers, 10 headphones, and copy paper in order to ensure they have all the supplies necessary to increase their learning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our class is working steadily towards improving our reading levels. Our beginning of the year average was a 5th grade level and our goal is to improve at least two years reading growth.
I work in an inner-city school in Michigan.
The vast majority of my students are on reduced lunch programs. Many come from homes of abject poverty. With very few exceptions, my students entered 9th grade with severe deficits in their reading and writing levels.
My Project
I am requesting a good deal of expo dry-erase markers as part of this project. We use these markers not only to write on the board in front of the class, but to practice vocabulary and grammar concepts on individual white boards. We use these for competitions to see which group of students can get the answer the quickest while still getting the answer right. The paper and pencil sharpener will help the class run smoother, ensuring we have enough paper for copies for all students and a way to keep our pencils sharp and ready.
I have realized in the four months since the year started that not having basic supplies makes it incredibly difficult to ensure my students are progressing as much as they should be.
These supplies will help my students close the deficits in their reading and writing levels.
