My students need a variety of nonfiction texts and nonfiction activities so that they can keep up with the rigor of the Common Core State Standards.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The Common Core State Standards have made a shift to incorporating more nonfiction into our curriculum as well as integrating science and social studies. My students still struggle with understanding nonfiction text and need all the support they can get.
I teach a diverse group of 2nd grade students in a low to mid-income neighborhood.
My class contains ELL, gifted, special education, and average students. We all work together to learn as much as we can and to come out at the end of the year better people for having known one another.
My Project
By getting sets of leveled nonfiction texts on the same topic, my students will be able to learn the same content despite their reading level. The sets of biographies and states symbols books will allow me to integrate the 2nd grade social studies curriculum more smoothly into our reading block. When students have access to more nonfiction, they are more likely to read it and more likely to understand it. We will also be able to use the games to help deepen their understanding of nonfiction texts.
If we have access to more nonfiction texts on different topics, my students will be able to read about a variety of topics and learn more information.
They will also become comfortable with reading nonfiction text. Many students currently lack the knowledge and confidence to tackle nonfiction text, but if they are exposed to it daily, they will become avid readers!
