I teach at one of the largest and most diverse high schools in Philadelphia. Almost all of our 1,500 students are eligible for free and reduced lunch. Because our students are poor and largely students of color — our school is drastically underfunded. In fact, Pennsylvania is one of several states that spends more money on wealthier students than they spend on low-income students.
Our students deserve better.
They are amazing, capable, hardworking kids. It's disappointing, but necessary that their teachers need to beg for basic supplies. Please help me support them!
I've spent over $1000 on basic supplies, and it's still difficult to do my job. We don't have enough textbooks, so many teachers copy materials they give out in class. But we have to pay for our own paper and now on top of that, the copiers are breaking down and running out of toner. We've been told that there isn't enough money in our budget to keep buying toner and it's only October! I've decided to start a donors choose campaign to buy toner for our copy machines so all 1,500 students can benefit from having basic materials to read and write on.
