My students are our earliest learners. They come in with the natural wonder and excitement of all young people. The students I teach come from struggling homes with a very high level of poverty and homelessness. Many of our families struggle to meet basic needs, so I hope to ensure my students have all educational needs met in a warm, caring, and fun environment. I strive to teach students a love of learning and to never let go of the wonder they all have at five years old.
My students often come from places lacking structure and organization. These are basic key supplies needed for learning. When I can teach my students, especially those with different needs, to organize their supplies, work, and thoughts, it is amazing how much they grow! I use pencil boxes to organize math kits so students have manipulatives at their fingertips without having to seek out materials. Expo markers are used often on whiteboards to allow for easy erasing and revisions as we are learning mistakes are the path to learning. Visually stimulating materials helps engage my early learners so printing in color are cardstock is almost a requirement!
