Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At my school, "Every Student Counts, and Every Moment Matters"!
My students come to school each and every day ready to take on the world and to learn, challenging themselves to be better than they were the day before.
We set academic goals in each content area and aim not only to achieve, but to surpass these goals. This is not always easy in a lower income neighborhood where the stress of the outside world can permeate into the classroom environment, where 100% of students receive free lunch and where Title I resources are cut due to dwindling budgets, but poverty is not an obstacle that my students let get in their way.
They aim for the highest standards of achievement! Their motivation, focus and drive is awe-inspiring.
My Project
These wipe boards, clipboards, Play-doh and colored paper will make a HUGE difference in our flexible seating classroom environment! The wipe boards will be used for math daily as we build our skills as mathematicians! You wouldn't believe how much more fun math is with the use of a wipe board for kids! There's something extra special about completing your work in a bright color that just wipes away if you make a mistake that needs to be corrected. In math, we also use Play-doh regularly as a manipulative to allow students to SEE what they are doing and build an understanding of the WHY and not just an abstract mathematical process. It's so fun to divide whole numbers by unit fractions when you are able to create items and divide them into equal amounts using Play-doh! Clipboards and colored paper will also enhance our instructional activities!
Students will keep these items in central locations in the classroom and will be able to utilize them whenever they need them.
Copies are in short supply, so having wipe boards for as many activities as possible is SO HELPFUL! For example, when playing a math game, students will record their work on their wipe board instead of on a paper recording sheet. It's fun and it helps the environment by saving paper! These materials are a vital tool for our learning!
