Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 9th/10th grade Global History to English Language Learners. My school is home to children of extreme poverty. Most of them have never left the city and don't consider that an option for their future. My students live in the poorest congressional district in the country.
Recent budget cuts have affected our school and our children very directly.
One of the first areas to get hit was our supplies budget. Since my students are learning English, we do not have time to search for supplies and we can not afford to stifle their creativity. My students feel pride after they are able to express what they have learned through art. This sense of pride bleeds through to their education and their home lives.
My Project
There are several essential things we need in our classroom. We need tape to hang things on the walls. We need a stapler to put together packets and hang bulletin boards. Additionally, since I teach Social Studies we have numerous opportunities for exciting and full-filling projects in order to engage and give students a hands on feel for history. These projects greatly enrich their learning and drive them to academic success. For these projects, I need construction paper and other supplies to allow my students to continue to hone their academic and creative skills.

I know how excited they will be when they realize they can learn through so many different avenues. They will gain a thirst for knowledge and education, which will only benefit them in the future.
