This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students walk into our classroom everyday, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. They love to read and be read to. We love to read stories and imagine the world our books can take us to. We are at a Title One school where all of the students in my class receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students' excitement is met with rigorous standards with very few materials to help extend our learning.
Our department budget is very low for our Special Education students. Special Education teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction in science, math, English and social studies without the requisite tools to teach our students. With little resources myself, I do all I can to ensure learning is fun and achievement is attainable for all of my students.
My Project
The students in my class have varying needs. Some have sensory processing, verbal, auditory and attending needs that are different from their typically developing peers. Their varying needs mean that it takes different ways to teach the same skill to different students.
Due to these differing needs, the students need a lot of hands- on practice to gain and retain basic skills that may come easily to others.
Our class demands small group instruction for focus and to gain skills. The items requested will support them in small group instruction and also, the games requested will help them gain social skills to work with one another.
