Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a linguistically and culturally diverse group of 3rd graders. The school that my students attend is a Title I school, meaning that the majority of the students receive free or reduced-price lunches. In my class specifically, 86% of my students are eligible for free lunch. The majority of my students are also English Language Learners and are learning English as their second language.
My students love learning and expressing their knowledge in creative ways.
Every single day I am so excited to come to work and spend time with my students watching them learn and grow. I never know what unique and interesting things will come out of their mouths and I am constantly surprised at how much they know.
On top of all of their bright ideas, my students really have compassionate and caring hearts. Some of my students are going through incredibly difficult things in their personal lives but you would hardly know it based on how they show up ready to learn each day. With the right support, I have no doubt these students are going big places in their future.
My Project
My classroom desperately needs a kidney table and chairs so that students can learn in small groups. Every day I hold small group lessons for my students in each subject while other students are working independently on similar tasks. These small groups can be an intervention for struggling students, extra practice for students who are performing on grade level, or an extension for students who are ready to be pushed to the next level of learning. One of the most important factors for a successful small group is that the students have a well structured setting where they know that they are about to engage in a very meaningful and purposeful activity with the teacher and a few of their peers.
It is very challenging to provide students with a structured and organized learning environment when the teacher and students are all forced to sit on the ground for their small group activities.
This makes it very difficult for teachers to feel professional and have the lesson materials properly organized and this gives the students the impression that the learning taking place is not very serious. This year my classroom is at maximum capacity which has caused a shortage of essential furniture (I have even seated new students temporarily at my own desk due to this shortage). My students are also incredibly diverse and for this reason there is almost always another teacher in my room throughout the day holding their own small groups. There is only one table available in my classroom to hold small groups at, which means either I or the other teacher is forced to sit on the floor to hold their mandatory small group lessons. By funding this project you will be helping to restore dignity to my small group lessons.
