My students need basic school supplies to be used in music class. Students complete worksheets, which require pencils, colored pencils and other coloring supplies. Students projects on the computer require headphones.
My young musicians are from an up and coming suburban school that is located near Cleveland, Ohio. Our school currently holds students in 3rd through 8th grade and has a population of about 1200 students. These students take an array of courses during their five years here for related arts classes. They are able to take general music, band, choir, STEM, video production, coding, gym, art and library. Our school is based around an open concept problem based model. Students generally have the same four music teachers throughout their five years. Many of my students have a strong passion for music and love being able to be a part of multiple musical groups.
What makes my musicians special is that they are able to think critically and work hard to be able to perform for the community.
Music class allows our students to use higher level thinking skills and learn life skills, which will help them far beyond our classroom. Our music staff works hard to fundraiser for the students to help provide them with the best instruments and instructional materials that we can. Our students value anytime that we are able to bring a new experience to the classroom.
My Project
Students need basic school supplies to be used in music class. At the beginning of the school year, students bring in supplies for the school year. These school supplies stay with their homeroom classes. With the large number of students that our music classes serve we go through a large number of tissues, which purchasing ends up landing on the teachers' shoulders. Students complete projects and worksheets in music class that require coloring supplies and pencils. Students create their own band, which includes an album cover, T-shirt design and logo. Without proper supplies students are not able to complete these fun projects.
In music class they not only learn singing and dancing, but also learn music coding and complete science experiments that are music related.
Students use OSMO Coding Jams, which require headphones. Students create their own compositions with Noteflight, which also require headphones. In the science experiments, students experiment with sound waves and their movement through space.
Having the proper supplies is how students are able to have a well rounded music class, that incorporate multiple projects. The projects help reach multiple types of students and inspire a love of music in all students.
