This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students live in an urban area with a high level of poverty. Many of them are the oldest child in their family. This comes with great responsibility while parents and guardians are working long hours through the night to provide basic needs for their children. Because of their circumstance, many of my students are up late at night and early in the morning making sure that their younger siblings are taken care of.
My students have a desire to please and do well in school, but often arrive extremely tired and lacking basic necessities, such as paper and pencils.
They also lack the experiences that many children of more affluent schools bring with them each day. It takes additional research and effort for my students to gain knowledge that I took for granted having as a child. I strive each day to provide them with resources and bring them closer to experiences they may never have.
My Project
Being a sixth grader is hard enough these days! I want my students to be able to focus on their education while in my classroom. It is important for my students to be able to come to school and not worry about how they might look or smell due to not having basic hygiene products at home.
Through this project, I will be able to alleviate anxieties about physical appearance that cause middle schoolers to lose interest in school.
The laundry detergent, body wash, and soap will help give these kids confidence in who they are and to walk through my door with their heads held high each day.
