My students need daily practice with language arts and math concepts via computer games, workbooks, and homework practice, as well as light filters to help them focus.
Repetition with variety: that is what my students with autism need. Variety is the key--doing the same thing over and over isn't fun for anyone, so we need to change it up! These materials will allow me to present concepts in multiple engaging ways.
My students are readers, writers, mathematicians, dinosaur-lovers, car experts, Lego-builders, artists, experimenters, computer geniuses, and pretty smart cookies!
They also all happen to have autism. Each one is unique and has his or her own special interests.
My school has a high percentage of students living in poverty and dealing with additional challenges such as single-parent homes and language barriers. My students are no exception and live with these situations in addition to their autism.
My Project
Because we are a separate classroom, my students remain with me for multiple years. As a result, many materials can become overused and boring. I constantly need new ideas and new materials to keep their interest while also meeting their ever-changing needs, but the cost of doing that adds up very quickly.
These materials will provide daily practice with language arts and math concepts. I would like to have a SmartBoard center for students to practice with the CD games while other students work with staff members to complete daily journals. Carryover to the home can occur through the use of the school-to-home comprehension kit.
Finally, the light filters will help my students to better focus. The fluorescent lighting in the classroom is difficult for them to handle while working.
Your donation will help provide my students with engaging materials and new experiences.
They are constantly learning and growing, and there's no telling how far we can go with the appropriate items in our classroom!
