I want to teach these kids how to use technology to help increase their knowledge and skills in mathematics. In sixth grade, they are taught mathematical concepts that will be used in college and real life.
Most of these students are facing challenges in their homes and communities.
I have experienced some of these challenges when I was in middle school as well. I personally know that up to date tools and supplies will benefit them to be successful.
I want to not worry about the basic tools needed to learn math.
I work in a trauma-informed school, and having a pencil is the last thing they need to worry about. They sometimes come to school hungry and tired because of their situation. I want to encourage showing work and help increase understanding.
Making sure that they brought a pencil to school is a battle that I do not want to fight.
My students are sometimes in different homes at a time or dealing with many issues after school. Our city has a significant population of homeless students. I want them to have something to write with and have an incentive to work hard monthly for a small prize.
