I came back to my hometown after being away for seven years. I was devastated to see the change in the overall socioeconomic status of my community since I have been gone. Payette is a small rural community in western Idaho. My students suffer with being homeless and starving.
Despite my students' troubles, they are eager to come to school where they feel safe and can enhance their knowledge.
With being a teacher in a low SES community, I see my students struggle to get the every day school supplies such as paper and pencil.
My Project
These materials are extremely important to the overall function of my classroom. It is important for my students to feel that they do not need to stress over the basic supplies needed for math class. A lot of my students come in every day asking for a pencil and paper. The supplies I am asking for are pencils and paper for the students to complete their math with. Glue sticks for when the students need to add hand outs to their interactive math notebook. I am asking for graphing paper because in middle school, students need to be able to graph on a coordinate grid and having graphing paper would make doing the work a little easier. I am asking for calculators so my students can check their work.
The math games are a fun way to get my students engaged with basic math skills that they are still struggling with.
The games will provided them an opportunity to work in groups or partners to strength their skills in multiplication and fractions. In middle school, I find that multiplication/division facts and fractions are hard concepts to grip and I want to provide the opportunity for my kids to pick up the skills in a way they find enjoyable. Sometimes the paper and pencil method is not the way for every student to learn and I want to reach all students.
