Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember a time you struggled to learn a concept? My student's struggle daily with concepts needed for independent living. They are most successful when using manipulatives, but the materials my students have access to are so outdated and in such poor condition they aren't usable.
My classroom is a community based program where students with severe disabilities learn functional skills in the areas of academics, independent living, and career/employment.
My students struggle with learning academics and require manipulatives and visual aids to gain the most out of their education. Unfortunately, the current material in my program does not support this way of learning. The math materials I have are falling apart and unsuable. What few materials aren't broken are getting used so often the students are becoming bored and are begging me for new activities and challenges.
In addition to their disabilities, most of my students live in poverty and are learning English as a second language. This makes learning academics even more of a challenge. My school is very supportive and accepting of all students, but because of budget cuts in such a high-needs area of the community, new materials are not an option for my program.
My Project
With new materials, my students will be able to gain an understanding of time. After high school, they will be held responsible for getting to work and appointments on time. On the job, they will be required manage time. With these materials, they would be able to become more independent which will lead to greater success in the working world.
My students also need skills to budget and pay for items and services. Unfortunately, not everyone in the community is honest, and I need to give my students the skills so they are not taken advantage of. By using the materials, my students will be able to manage their money with little assistance or know what to expect when handling finances.
Because my students have such severe disabilities, they often struggle to stay on task. Timers would not only provide an understanding of time, but teach them how to manage time. This skill is not only important for their education, but important for future employment.
New material will allow my students to learn some of the most important skills they will need after high school.
They have the capability of doing many things independently and need the opportunity to learn the material in high school.
Many community members view these young adults as incompetent. I, on the other hand, believe in my students. I see their potential and I push them daily to succeed. These materials will help my students master skills that others believe are impossible.
