Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Both schools are strongly committed to interrupting patterns of injustice by providing students with a relevant, rigorous, and personalized educational experience.
Our school is a 6-12 middle and high school in the Oakland Unified School District that serves 473 students. Ninety-four percent of students who attend receive free or reduced lunch. Twenty-three percent of students are classified as English Language Learners. The majority of the students are Hispanic/Latino students who live within the neighborhood the school serves. The high school, in particular, has a strong focus on health and bioscience, and students who attend participate in internships in that field.
United for Success is a 6-8 middle school in the Oakland Unified School District that serves 382 students. Eighty-eight point five percent of the students who attend UFSA receive free or reduced lunch. Forty point six percent of students are classified as English Language Learners. Students at the school speak Spanish, Mam, Tongan, Arabic, Tagalog, Karen, Karenni, Nepali, and Chinese. United for Success Academy has a Newcomer Program that serves up to 40 students who have moved to the United States in the last year and speak little English. UFSA also has a significant population
My Project
In order to provide students with a seamless library experience, I need to be able to perform basic tasks such as processing and repairing books, creating displays, and keeping the library clean. In addition to housing high quality and engaging books, a well run library is able to repair, process and display those books in ways that help students to locate and enjoy them.
The materials in this project are basic library needs that SHOULD be supplied by my school district, but absolutely ARE NOT.
When we get new books, they can't just go on the shelf - the need to be processed and protected using label covers, dust jackets, etc. Many books that are well loved need repair and things like goo-gone and book glue will allow our library to continue to circulate the books kids have read the most. Sufficiently protecting and not discarding materials is particularly important during these times of budget cuts in my school district. Having well taken care of materials isn't good enough, that is why signage and labels are extremely important - the printer, plastic sign holders and label maker will allow students to navigate the library with ease so that they can find what they want.
My students deserve a library experience that is not compromised by the financial situation of my school district.
