This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are exposed to several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention.
Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical."
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience in school.
My Project
Can you imagine not being able to meet your most basic personal hygiene needs? This is a reality for most of my school students. They do not have access to basic toiletries like soap and deodorant and cannot bathe before school. They are constantly embarrassed about their appearance and smell. Sometimes peers tease each other about how they smell. Most of the time the family is forced to pick between buying shampoo for their young children and paying their bills.
Obtaining personal hygiene products can be a huge challenge. And my students need your extraordinary help for a year-round supply of hygiene items.
They are expensive and buying them can shift money away from other important purchases like healthcare and transportation. In addition, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits do not cover these products. We are reaching out to extraordinary donors and supporters like you to stand with us in this project.
