For years the lack of science laboratory equipment in many of the New York City public high schools has been a serious problem. However, science teachers have managed to do their work by sharing the small amount of available equipment because laboratory rooms were centralized around a science department. All science students in a high school came to the same few laboratory rooms located near a science stock room. Now that the large high schools are being subdivided into smaller high schools, the science laboratories are being relocated throughout the building or buildings, often in regular classrooms without water or equipment. Not anticipating this problem the New York City administrators did not allocate additional funds. Many science teachers have resorted to teaching paper and pencil labs that eliminate the need for equipment. This is a disservice to students who need the experience of collecting and analyzing real data and who need the practice to pass the state mandated Regents exams. As a teacher at the Law and Public Service House of Washington Irving High School I present to DonorsChoose my list of essential laboratory equipment. From year to year I have been assigned to teach biology, earth science,and physical science.
The following equiptment is needed:

5. Models for making and understanding contour maps
6. Ring stands with buret clamps and 1 ring clamp
7. Ceramic wire gauze
8. Hot plate
9. Drying rack
10. Test tube racks, test tube holders, and test tube brushes
11. Utility cart
12. Glassware (small assortment of beakers, graduated cylinders, test tubes, watch glasses, and flasks)
13. Polypropylene (beakers, funnels, and graduated cylinders)
14. Heat Resistant gloves
15. Safety glasses
