Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a high school chemistry class in a Title I school which is 49% Hispanic and 46% Asian. Almost every student is a second language learner and most will be the first in their family to attend college. Our school is in the most economically challenged areas in San Jose, California. We provide our students with most of their educational materials and about 83% are in the school lunch program.
I want my students to receive the best STEM education so they will be successful in their college and career aspirations.
We have to provide most of our students with the basic classroom materials so that they can participate fully in the classroom activities. I believe this training will give my students the experience for college or a lab tech career.
My Project
The extremely high cost of living in Silicon Valley creates a large population of economically challenged students, some of whom even have shelter insecurity. Our school provides them and their families with food through the lunch programs, however, other very basic needs will some times come out of the teacher's pocket.
We want our students to feel secure and welcome without any additional burdens added to their lives.
Some of our students can not bring in even the basic school supplies and our district has fewer resources to cope with the needs of very impoverished neighborhoods like ours. Our students and their parents would appreciate any assistance that you are able to provide in support of these needs.
