This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Going to school in West Philadelphia is met with many challenges, including but not limited to lack of resources. My students are incredible and work hard to overcome these challenges everyday, but day after day this can become tiresome and discouraging for them.
My students are hard working, motivated, inspiring 4th graders in need of basics school supplies to help them reach their full potential.
When provided with even just the most basic supplies they thrive and continue to impress me everyday.
My Project
Starting the year off on a good foot is so important for setting the tone for the entire year. My students spent the first few weeks of this past school year writing their journal entries on scrap paper while I hoped that their parents would send in notebooks, folders, and other basic school supplies to be used on a daily basis. Due to the fact that 100% of my students are economically disadvantaged, I quickly learned that this was not possible for most families. So the stock of supplies that I had purchase (which I had thought was pretty large) quickly depleted.
Next year, I am hoping that my students will come into school on the first day and be provided with everything they need to be successful, right off the bat.
This will allow them to come in feeling prepared and ready to take on 4th grade and be successful in all that they do. My students need notebooks, markers, folders, glue, paper and other basic school supplies to start the year off on a great foot!
