Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a K-5 elementary school in a low-income, urban community. Our school has a diverse ethnic population, most of whom are English language learners. Our student population is over two thousand.
95% of our students are English language learners.
I teach general ed, gifted, and special needs students. My students are eager to learn, and they love to create. They are bright, talented, and artistic, and they never cease to amaze me.
My Project
Help me give my students markers, crayons, watercolors and oil pastels so that they can continue to create art together at home, as we are in another school lockdown due to rising COVID cases. After being out of the building for 6 months, the children were excited to come back to school. However, school is not what it used to be, and neither are our students. Only a handful of the students came in on any given day. They were socially distanced, wore masks all day, worked on assignments on their devices, and lunched and learned in the classroom. Most of the special teachers hd been pulled to teach classroom subjects remotely. Gym, music, and dance were taught via Zoom.
Just as our students were starting to feel safe and good about being back to school, rising COVID cases closed us back down.
More than ever, our children need to keep their connection to school, their teachers, and each other. Creating art together, online during google meets, will offer children an opportunity to socialize, express themselves freely, and provide them with much needed confidence, all while keeping connected.
