This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are brilliant thinkers and hard workers. They are second graders in a Title One school, with almost all of my students qualifying for the free lunch program. There are times when we and/or the students need supplies, but do not have the funds to get them. I am advocating on their behalf to provide materials that will help create an enriching, learning environment in my classroom. I want to engage their curious minds and inspire their creativity. With the help of DonorsChoose.org, I am working to ensure that they have the right tools to grow.
My Project
Our class is learning to understand place value and to compute sums up to one thousand. The students need more base-ten blocks to demonstrate the concept of grouping ones into a new ten, or tens into a new hundred. When children use manipulatives for math, they are able to show the concept on new tens or hundreds when they use models and then make drawings. Eventually, we will be combining quantities to add two-digit numbered equations with carrying. We will explore different two-digit addition methods: Show All Totals and New Groups Below. The base-ten blocks will help them visually when applying the differing addition methods.
