Like all children throughout the nation, my students are having to learn how to do school online. This has brought many serious issues, problems, and concerns to the surface. Our school is predominately lower income with a large majority of students representing various ethnic backgrounds.
This pandemic has shown us that lower income ethnic groups are getting hit the hardest.
I worry that my students aren't able to do their school work for several reasons. Parents are still working outside the home, student has to babysit siblings and/or cousins, no internet service, or there is a language barrier. When parents are worried about putting food on the table and keeping their loved ones healthy, it's difficult to add school into the mix.
My Project
Getting books into my students hands has become almost impossible with social distancing and distant learning. I want to keep my students and their families safe, yet I also want my students to be reading at home. Many students don't have access to books and libraries at this time. Digital books are also difficult due to the high demand in the home with parents working from home and children trying to do their academics online.
I want my students to be able to read to learn, explore and discover new things, to laugh, to learn empathy, to find friendship, or simply to escape the pandemic through the pages of a book.
