Bang, Zoom...Straight To The Moon, Alice!!

My students need 14 Astronomy resources, including games, book sets, activity tubs, kits and a set of space sand.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Like Ralph Kramden told Alice, sometimes I just want to send these kids "Bang, zoom straight to the moon"- through fun, hands-on astronomy lessons...of course! Next year, I will be the Science Lab teacher for grades K through 3 in an economically impoverished neighborhood consisting of mainly Spanish speakers. As I have learned in my 9 years as the Pre-K teacher at this school, language can sometimes be a barrier, especially with the more challenging and abstract subjects. I find that the students learn best through hands-on interactions with interesting educational materials, and quality literature.

The solar system is an exciting (yet abstract) topic that I have a true passion for teaching. Most of our students only know the city we live in, and Mexico; they have not yet learned what else is out there, or that we are only a small piece to a gigantic puzzle. They know that we have different seasons, but don't know why. They understand that it gets dark and light everyday, that the sun and moon are in the sky, but now how and why we have days, weeks, months, and years. While it is a challenging and abstract concept- with the proper tools, and an enthusiastic teacher, it so easily lends itself to scientific inquiry and investigation.

With models, games, literature, and a little elbow grease, I can create a spiraling curriculum that will teach the younger students about day, night and seasons, and the older ones about the properties of Mars. Once we have spent a few weeks (I only see each class 40 minutes per week) learning the basics through the literature, theme boxes, experiments, charts, and graphs, the children will be able to challenge themselves, and each other, with some games.

We can not accomplish this without you! You could help spark the curiosity of the next John Glenn, Neil Armstrong or Sally Ride. Your donation may catapult a student into a NASA program which changes life as we know it...that puts America back in the forefront of science and space exploration. You could be responsible for the ingenuity to make living on the moon possible! But at the very least (which is really the very most) you will be giving these children an opportunity they may not have otherwise had, to learn about space through hands-on exploration and inquiry... to learn about "infinity and beyond!"
