Beginning Band is an exciting time for my 5th and 6th grade students! Their eyes light up every time they sit down in class and learn something new to develop their musical skills. The students in my Junior High and High School bands have put in years of hard work to achieve their current level of ability.
We are always setting goals to improve as individuals and as a team.
We have the support of our community but many students come to class without the materials needed to be successful due to financial constraints.
My Project
Reeds are essential to playing woodwind instruments. Often, students have broken reeds that make it difficult to produce sound, which causes them to miss out on playing in class. When a student's reed breaks, if they don't have extras, they could go days or even weeks before they can get a new one.
Because we live in a small mountain community, travel to get these supplies can be difficult, as well as coming up with the finances to purchase them.
Many students don't have the proper cleaning supplies for their instruments. This can cause problems such as sticking keys/valves, poor tone quality, and even mold growing in their instruments. Providing the necessary tools will help foster a sense of responsibility in every student as they will need to maintain their instrument through the year.
How many of us have heard a performance where someone was out of tune? A set of class tuners will help especially higher grade-level students develop their ear and play in tune. The metronome feature will also be a great tool for keeping steady tempos in their home practice.
