Band Students Strive for a Solid Foundation in Performance!
My students need a class set of the method book series, "Foundations for Superior Performance" in order to develop the fundmental skills to make music in a band setting.
Were you a member of the school band growing up? Many adults were in the band in their youth but for some reason, they did not continue. I believe that sound teaching in a strong methodology gives kids the skills they need to make music they love and enjoy, therefore keeping them involved for life!
My students are 5th-8th grade band students in a PreK-8th grade Montessori Public School.
They take pride in their creativity and self-motivation to learn new and challenging things. This passion spills over into our band classes where students are continually challenged to expand their musical awareness and are given many opportunities to push their level of musical expertise on their instrument. They are hard working, creative kids who are looking to move to a higher level of musicianship on their instruments and the selected method books will get them on their way.
My Project
This method book series is called "Foundations for Superior Performance". This book addresses the basic needs of all concert band or wind band students in that it teaches the fundamentals of musicianship as related to band students. The book provides a structured course which can be followed daily or weekly and can be used from five to 45 minutes per rehearsal.
The musical concepts and skills in the book follow a spiral curriculum so when the material progresses, it constantly returns to build on prior knowledge. This method is also used in the high schools in our area and is widely respected among band directors throughout the country and world. So by implementing this method book, the students will gain valuable musical knowledge and will be able to progress throughout their time in our band program. My hope is that they will ultimately gain enough facility and overall musical ability that they will develop a love for music and a love for making music that will last a lifetime.
We have heard for years that the study of music raises test scores and can make children brighter.
But what about music for the sake of music? Is there no intrinsic value to the study of music itself? I believe music is a tool to teach beauty and furthermore, I believe we can teach children to be creators and connoisseurs of music for themselves and for things greater than themselves. Help us by providing one piece of the building blocks needed to build competent and creative band musicians!
