My Students

My students are middle school-aged musicians. They are just beginning their band experience and are discovering the benefits of hard work and team cooperation through their involvement in band class. Learning to master playing an instrument is a huge undertaking, but these students show me their commitment and excitement for learning every day. All students are welcome in the band program and daily we strive to set aside our personal concerns, our divisions from social groups, and our outside stressors in order to focus on making music as one unified ensemble.

My Project

Woodwind instruments require reeds to make sound, but reeds are costly for students and they break or wear out easily (not due to misuse, it is just the nature of them!) Students who play other instruments such as Brass or Percussion do not have to buy and replace their reeds. Sometimes students ask to play the "cheapest instrument" which is heartbreaking because our band needs all types of instruments.

My band students practice every day to prepare for three concerts and a festival.

As my students' playing matures, they have opportunities for solo contests and honor ensembles in their community. My goal is for each student to appreciate music as a life-long skill.
