Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite low income, high poverty, and local violence these students enter the music room every day full of positive energy. I often hear my students say, "Thank you for teaching us" on their way out of the classroom. These students need creative and meaningful learning experiences through music.
Music has been reinstated at CPMS for the first time in 8 years.
Our music classes range from 15-37 students in a class and cover grades 6-8. Part of my role as a music educator is to help advocate for my students, find more creative ways in which to provide them with instruments and materials for class, offer children as many opportunities to engage as possible, and to encourage their creative learning process in a manner that is meaningful and relevant to the child.
My Project
Over 100 students at my school have enrolled in instrumental music class and are excited to bring middle school band back onto our campus. We were fortunate to have instruments in stock and a district that funded major repairs, however, we now need the basic classroom supplies to use these band instruments. The Excellence in Theory workbooks will help students learn to read music, practice ear training, and learn basic music history; all of which are key components to developing music skills. The reed and trombone will pair with current music resources to actually permit the students to play on instruments, while the metronomes will teach young players how to play with a steady beat. Please help me get the supplies my students need to rebuild a middle school band program!
