My students need instruments to play. I have more students in the flute section than I have instruments for unfortunately. In order to give my students the opportunity to experience the wonders of music....
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a Title I, school located in an urban suburb of Atlanta, Ga. in the Clayton County School System. All of my students (100%) take part in a free and reduced lunch program. There is very little that is supplied to us, through school system support, therefore almost everything we have acquired as a program has been done so through creative/innovative fundraising, grant writing and donations. Do to the few opportunities that are given to us, we take advantage of any opportunity that comes our way to give our students a greater high school band experience.
My Project
Over the past two years, our band program has experienced an unprecedented amount of growth. My 1st year as director, I had to turn students away because we did not have enough instruments for all students. After that, I vowed to never have to turn students away again.
Thusfar, I have received grants from VH1 and Mr. Holland's Opus to assist with replacing damaged instruments and ordering new ones.
We are well on our way to updating our inventory, so that all students can be given the opportunity to experience the wonders of the arts!
Another issue is that our band does not have ANYTHING to protect us from the rain. We performed in Alabama last fall and it rained. Instruments were damaged and uniforms became wet and had to be detailed all over again. As a band program that performs all the time, poncho's are essential for the efficiency of our program.
