My students need a way for their art to be put on display. The display rails I'm requesting will enable me to QUICKLY display student work without ruining it with tape or tacks.
As a middle school art teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Most students in my middle school classroom have had little to no formal art education thus far; there are no elementary art specialists in my district, and my own position was just recently expanded from half to full time.
My students look forward to the opportunity to express their creativity and "let go" of the stressors they carry each day via art.
For many of my students, art is the one time each day that they can truly express themselves and feel successful; art is what motivates them to get out of bed in the morning and come to school. I am amazed at their resilience, enthusiasm, creativity, and talent. They deserve a first-class, well-rounded education that includes a strong foundation in the arts!
My Project
Every time I showcase students' art I catch them talking about it; their pride in their art (and their classmates' art!) is evident. Art was recently expanded from half to full time at my middle school, but our hallways only have enough (cork) tack strips to be able to display a few pieces of art at a time. The few cork tack strips I currently have either require I put holes in students' art to hang it or that I matte their art, which is time-consuming and expensive. My budget only allows me to buy basic art supplies, so I'm unable to purchase the display rails I've requested. If I had rows of display rails up and down our major hallways, I could display art from every student ALL the time, not just for special art shows.
Display rails will help me promote student art, inspire students to talk about art, and foster a greater sense of community at my high-poverty middle school.
An ongoing display of student art will help rid our school of its barren, "institutional" looking hallways!
