I have the pleasure of teaching students with educable mental disabilities (EMD.) My students are always on the move! Exercise ball chairs are a terrific classroom tool to help with this and are ideal for children with ADD, EMD, low tone or processing disorders. Because of this, I would like to introduce these exercise balls into the classroom. In addition to EMD, most of the students have attention deficit hyperactivity (ADHD.) Some recent work has stated that students can better learn with controlled activity. Exercise balls will allow this movement to strengthening the body while the learning. The ball can be used in various ways to increase classroom attention, on task activity, body movement, and balance.
An exercise ball can increase balance, abdominal, back, leg muscles. This is done through appropriate posture while balancing on the ball. While using the ball the student will sit a desk to complete the given work and the student will need sit correctly to help balance the ball in place while working. Or the student can produce controlled bounces while working which help in physical activity. For students who are in motion, the controlled activity allows an acceptable venue for movement that is not distracting to others and is healthy for the student. Sitting on balls is among the most dynamic methods available for improving trunk stability. This not only engages the body but the mind as well.
In addition the exercise ball can be used to increase classroom instruction. In class we often use body movement to learn given material, for example acting out math symbols or terms. The balls can be used in games to learn multiplication/ division thru the use of rhythm in the bounce continence (e.g. bounce for each word: two times two is four). This way the students are using verbal skills, memory skills, listening skills, and body movement to learn a given topic.
With the new guidelines that require all students have additional physical activity, the use of balance balls in the classroom not only allows uninterrupted instruction but a fun way to gain physical activity in a way that helps a student learn.
