My students have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. They are all high-functioning and extremely intelligent, however they often struggle with socialization.
My students need to be able to improve their social skills through leisure activities in an environment that supports socialization.
My goal for these students is for them to leave high school with the social skills needed to function appropriately in the real world.
The sensory support of ball chairs has been proven to allow students to focus more and be feel relaxed in a leisure environment.
By providing students with an environment that is not only suitable for learning, but also welcoming and relaxing, students will be able to develop the skills needed to conduct social activities in a setting that cannot be created with one-piece desks. My students will be able to eliminate the barriers that come with their disability by being able to have a save and comfortable place to practice their social skills.
In Their Own Words
We want our classroom to be fun and inviting to everyone, but unfortunately we cannot do this with the standard desks that the school gives us. We need furniture that we can enjoy so that we are proud of our classroom and can invite other friends to come and socialize with us.
We will be able to be better students by improving our social skills by inviting others into our classroom. We will make our classroom feel like home and can encourage others to come and practice their social skills with us so that no one has to go through high school without a friend.
We want other students to see what we are capable of, beyond beating video games and being referred to as the "geeks" of the school. We all have autism, but with the right support, we can show the world that we have a lot to contribute. We will start to do this be creating an environment that is suitable to build social skills.
