Our Kindergarten playground is a very busy place. There are few resources other than a climbing structure and a few balls shared by many classes. As a result the children resort to chase games or disagree over who had one of the few balls at any given moment. Being young, they are not adept at sharing well or resolving some of these conflicts We just need more balls! With the new school year the children are playing with the balls and are using the garbage cans as "baskets" for basketball games. Not a bad solution... but a movable basketball hoop and basket balls would give them more opportunity to practice those gross motor skills that young children (boys especially) need to develop. Those big muscles need a workout before they can sit still on the rug and listen to a story. Other balls would offer practice at different muscle building and game playing skills: soccer balls, red, bouncy balls and great big jump balls. Every ball would add an opportunity for my students to hone those physical and social skills so important to learning and increase the time each day that they are engaging in hearty physical activity so crucial to good health.
