Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Don't you hate sitting at your desk all day in an uncomfortable chair? Are you always finding a way to get up and move around? Does this make you productive? This is the same dilemma my students face on a daily basis. These growing, tactile learners lose focus and stamina in those terrible chairs.
I am a teacher of gifted students at a title I school.
That means approximately 90% of our students receive free/reduced price lunch based on family income. I teach math to grades first-fifth for the gifted students. I have many students that are hyperactive and are tactile learners.
My Project
Being a teacher of gifted students is especially challenging because these students get bored easily and get off task. I only have a short period of time each day to work with my students on enriching curriculum that challenges them beyond the mainstream setting so I have to make every minute count. I feel like the least restrictive environment makes it possible to get ideas flowing. Balance ball chairs will allow my students to wiggle around in their groups and stimulate their brains.
I know that having balance chairs in my class will make a huge difference.
Two years ago another teacher at our school had a grant fully funded through DonorsChoose for the balance ball chairs. Whenever I walked into her room, I was amazed at how focused and engaged her first and second graders were. They were able to wiggle about on their chairs without distracting others. These chairs allow students to release some stored up energy while the movement builds muscle and stimulates their brains.
